Haiga is the Japanese word for haiku painting. The form originated in 17th century Japan and was used to decorate scrolls, screens and fans. While the haiku and the painting in the haiga share the same space, they are meant to complement, and not explain, one another. Currently, modern haiga are being created and showcased on the web and in journals.
